Donatiello II is said to be one of three recently discovered galaxies so difficult to detect that they were all missed by an algorithm designed to search astronomical data for potential candidate galaxies.
Even the best algorithms have limitations when it comes to separating very faint galaxies from individual stars.
In these most difficult identification situations, discovery must be done the old-fashioned way – a dedicated human search of the data.
The data underlying these discoveries were collected by the Dark Energy Survey (DES), an intense six-year observation performed by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on Inter’s 4-metre VĂctor M. Blanco telescope. The American Cerro Tololo observatory in Chile.
As reported by Ukrinform, the NASA/ESA Hubble space telescope photographed the emission nebula Tarantula (also known as NGC 2070) in the constellation Golden Pisces.
