Physicists from the China University of Science and Technology and Tsinghua University have developed for the first time a high-throughput quantum key distribution method that brings the creation of a quantum communication network based on telecommunications fiber one step closer.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Xinhua.

Quantum key distribution is based on a physical feature of quantum mechanics that makes it theoretically impossible to create an independent and identical copy of an arbitrary unknown quantum state, thus providing a reliable way to exchange encrypted messages between remote users.

In China, quantum switch distribution networks based on telecommunications fibers have been implemented at the metropolitan and intercity scale. However, it is considered a disadvantage that the key distribution efficiency decreases exponentially with respect to the data transmission distance.

In the new study, the researchers used two stand-alone off-the-shelf lasers to demonstrate a simpler and more cost-effective way to dramatically increase the efficiency of key distribution when operating urban and long-distance distances.

According to the result of this study, when using a commercial fiber length of 304 km and an ultra-low loss fiber length of 407 km, the efficiency of switch deployment increased threefold.
