Apple has received a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office for a collection of sensors that can be placed under the screen. This patent covers not only the iPhone, but a wide variety of Apple devices, including the iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and even future mixed reality devices.
The patent focuses on sensors like TouchID, pressure sensors, health sensors, optical sensors like self-mixing sensors, light sensing and range (LiDAR) sensors, gaze tracking sensors, and more. The patent also talks about using various input-output devices such as buttons, touch sensors, touchpads, microphones and accelerometers to collect user input.
The image below shows a cross-sectional view of a stack of displays partially covering the sensor. On the other hand, a top view of the drawing is shown showing how the sensors can be placed at the bottom of the screen.
This patent covers technology previously reported in April 2022 that aims to eliminate the notch on the iPhone and move the TrueDepth camera system behind the screen. With this patent, Apple has taken another step towards a completely frameless iPhone.
