Reddit suffered a cyberattack Sunday night that allowed hackers to access internal business systems and steal internal documents and source code. The company says the hackers used a phishing trap for Reddit employees, with a landing page impersonating the intranet site. This site tried to steal employee credentials and two-factor authentication tokens.

After an employee fell victim to a phishing attack, an attacker managed to break into Reddit’s internal systems to steal data and source code.

“After successfully obtaining an employee’s credentials, an attacker gained access to some internal documents, code, and some internal dashboards and business systems,” Reddit wrote in its security incident report.

“We are showing no signs of disruption in our main production systems (working parts of our stack). started Reddit and save most of our data)”.

Reddit said it became aware of the breach after an employee reported the incident to the company’s security team.

After investigating the incident, Reddit said the stolen data included company connections and limited contact information for current and former employees. The data also included some details about the company’s advertisers, but credit card information, passwords and ad performance were not available.

Reddit also says there are no indications that attackers were able to break into the production systems used to run the site. While Reddit did not share any details about the phishing attack, it cited a similar attack used to hack Riot Games.

In this attack, the attackers hacked Riot Games and stole the source code of the League of Legends (LoL) multiplayer online battle arena, Teamfight Tactics (TFT) auto-battle game, and an old anti-cheat platform.

The gaming company later received a $10 million ransom request to ensure the data was not leaked, and it declined. Later, a hacker tried to sell the source code of League of Legends for $10 million on a hacking forum. BleepingComputer contacted Reddit with additional questions, but there was no immediate response.
