The American company SpaceX conducted ground tests by simultaneously firing 31 of the 33 Raptor 2 rocket engines of the most powerful Starship rocket.
This was reported by The New York Times, Ukrinform reports.
The publication states that one of the 33 engines was not started and the other stopped immediately after starting. However, engineers noted that 31 engines would be enough to put the rocket into orbit.
The company tweeted a video of the test at the Starship test site in Boca Chica, Texas.
“That’s enough to get into orbit! One day Starship will take us to Mars,” he wrote in a microblog Elon Musk.
More than 110,000 people watched the online broadcast on the NASA website.
Beginning in December 2020, the company conducted a series of test flights for Starship prototypes several kilometers away to determine the landing procedure. After several failed attempts, in May 2021 SpaceX was able to launch and land the Starship undamaged.
Starship is a reusable space launch system owned by the superheavy launch vehicle and being developed by the American company SpaceX to transport humans to Mars (and even beyond) and return them to Earth. The first stage of the rocket is called Super Heavy. It is also designed to launch the second stage into orbit, a spaceship of the same name as the rocket – Starship (Ukrainian: Zorelit). The latter will be produced in several versions: passenger, cargo (a possible option for lifting giant satellites) or a tanker for refueling in space. Both stages will be powered by Raptor engines and will return to the airstrip. After being refueled, the Starship will be ready to fly again.
Elon Musk believes Starship can completely replace existing Falcon rockets and the Dragon and Dragon 2 spacecraft that his company currently operates.
