Illinois Institute of Technology (USA) engineers have designed a new lithium air battery with a record resource. The study was published in the journal Science.

Experts talked about the creation of a battery that can provide much higher energy density than a conventional lithium-ion battery. The authors of the study noted that it can be used in high-load capacity vehicles – trains, airplanes and water transport.

The new generation lithium air battery is based on a solid electrolyte based on a compound of ceramic and polyethylene oxide. In combination, they can provide high ionic conductivity and stability. According to scientists, the battery can handle more than 1,000 recharge cycles with a slight decrease in energy efficiency (about five percent).

The paper states that a lithium air battery could potentially store one kilowatt-hour or more per kilogram. This is four times the performance of modern lithium-ion batteries.
