China has announced that it will use AI to move ships away from space debris around the Earth. The goal is to create an automated space debris monitoring system that ensures the safety of space missions.

The country has already had problems with space debris and is looking for a solution to the growing amount of debris around our orbit. The Chinese project is being developed by the State Astronautical Dynamics Laboratory (ADL), affiliated with the Satellite Control Center in Xi’an. Not only China is concerned about the presence of space debris, agencies such as ESA are also investing in programs to remove debris from orbit.

The project has a rather long title: intelligent modeling of the complex evolutionary principle of complex environments for space debris and autonomous monitoring.” Despite the exaggerated name, the idea can be summarized as the creation monitoring system where AI will manage space debris.

Space debris is a real problem for many countries

Currently, there are millions of fragments of old rockets, satellites and other debris in orbit around the planet. Some of these components can hold fuel and a collision can lead to serious accidents.

According to Chinese researchers, the debris is the result of more than 640 different events, including explosions, destruction and collisions, that have occurred over 65 years of space exploration. Contrary to popular belief, objects in orbit move at high speeds, so collisions with them lead to serious accidents with the formation of new debris and more space debris.

Using AI, it is possible to create an autonomous system capable of predicting the speed and position of such debris. In this way, collisions in future space missions could be avoided. It will also be interesting to see if scientists can come up with a way to “clean up the Earth’s orbit” by reducing the amount of debris present in space.
