One drone was created with a peculiar characteristic: echolocation. This feature allows you to fly a small unmanned aircraft with an improved locomotion system. However, this ability was inspired by bats. To make this feature possible, the machine takes some advantage of the microphone and bell. Typically, devices use radio waves or lasers or even GPS sensors for this task; however, the required equipment is too heavy for a small drone.

It is in thinking about the limitations explained that researchers from University of Toronto (Canada) under the guidance of a scientist Frederike Dumbgencreated a system for mapping walls with an accuracy of up to two centimeters, which is very similar to bat echolocation, but relies only on a speaker and a shared microphone. Many drones have these features, so extending their use was an easy decision.

A little more about the echolocation system in drones

For this feature to be available, the speaker plays sounds in a preset frequency range that “discount” on walls and/or obstacles and recorded with a microphone. The algorithm then calculates the response of the sound waves and reconstructs the detected surfaces in the analyzed area.

With the concept explained in mind, the professionals installed a buzzer and four microphones on the drone and evaluated the results. The device under test had wheels and was significantly smaller. The result was positive: the machine mapped the walls with ptrim 2.5 cmas well as improve efficiency 8 cm while flying.

Regardless of the success of the approach, lower accuracy was still observed than other alternatives using cameras or lasersbut participants concluded that it could be useful for specific cases, such as areas that are difficult to map.
