Known for its virtual social platform of the same name, Bigscreen introduced a virtual reality headset that it claims is the world’s smallest VR headset. The device named Beyond weighs only 170 g with the strap and works with a computer. For comparison, the similar HTC Vive Flow model weighs about 190 g.
Bigscreen Beyond is equipped with two OLED displays with a resolution of 5K (5120×2560) and a refresh rate of 90 Hz, capable of tracking with six degrees of freedom (6DoF). There are also three-element optics that eliminate the screen door effect (a structure where thin lines separating pixels become visible), providing a horizontal 93-degree field of view.
The manufacturer does not offer any new technology to achieve this size. It’s quicker to sacrifice a few things. For example, to fit the headset properly, Bigscreen prompts you to scan your face using an iPhone app. Monitoring relies on external SteamVR base stations rather than built-in cameras, and headsets are only offered as an option. Connection to the computer is carried out through a special box that supplies power and is responsible for transmitting the image.
Bigscreen claims Beyond supports the SteamVR platform and works with all compatible controllers (including Vive and Valve Index) and full-body trackers. These accessories must be purchased separately as they are not supplied with the headset. You’ll also need a fairly powerful computer with at least a quad-core processor and a GeForce RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card.
The Bigscreen Beyond VR headset is now up for pre-order for $999. It’s cheaper than the bulky, lower-res alternatives ($1,500 Meta Quest Pro and $1,099 HTC Vive XR Elite), but you should keep in mind that this isn’t a standalone headset. Delivery was promised to the US in the third quarter, and to Canada and Europe in the fourth quarter. At the end of this year – the beginning of next year, the new product will go on sale in other countries.
