In search of a technology that will give motorcyclists greater resilience, Taurus Helmets has unveiled the first graphene helmet made in Brazil. Graph-X was created in collaboration between the company and the University of Caxias do Sul and UCS Graphene. The proposal is to present the public with a more durable product that absorbs shock more effectively and has better thermal and acoustic performance.

In addition to these two companies, the helmet company also had the participation of Znano, who works in the field of nanotechnology, to help them during the project. From there came the idea to use graphene, offering positive results in all phases of its testing. The project started in 2020, but it wasn’t until 2021 that it really moved towards viable production.

Taurus Helmets President Carlos Laurentiis stated on the Fast Company website that the biggest challenge was the combination of compounds to form the product. “The biggest challenge was getting the Graph-X formula to combine graphene with materials that had not yet been used in our manufacturing process.”

Use in the Cafe Racer line

The first line of graphene helmets sold in Brazil is Urban Helmets’ Cafe Racer. They will cost the same as the acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) line being produced; with a suggested retail price of R$989.

The material is used in industry for a variety of purposes, and is a promising option to meet the required safety and manufacturing parameters. In addition to being used in healthcare to create prostheses, it can also be found in civil engineering, energy, telecommunications, and electronics.

Original idea from Italy

The first graphene helmet was created in collaboration between Graphene Flagship, Momodesign and the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2016. It was originally presented at Composites Europe, an event that took place from November 29 to December 1, 2016 in Germany and then conquered the European market. Be Dimension took part in the offer along with others, and about 3000 of them were made for sale at special motorcycling events.

So far, there are a few companies working with this material, but with its use and acceptance in the industry, it may become more common. The appearance of Taurus Helmets only demonstrates that in 2023 this market is worth keeping an eye on.
