During his first demonstration Bing AI from Microsoft, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot, made several factual errors in financial data, according to the findings of independent AI researcher Dmitry Brereton. A week ago, Microsoft confidently unleashed the power of its artificial intelligence, Bing. While trying to summarize Gap’s Q3 2022 financial report, Microsoft’s Bing artificial intelligence made several mistakes. The Gap report reported a gross margin of 37.4% with an adjusted gross margin of 38.7% excluding depreciation. However, Bing incorrectly reported a gross margin of 37.4%, including adjustments and depreciation.

Bing AI also reported that Gap had an operating margin of 5.9%, but this information does not appear in the company’s financial results. In fact, the operating margin was 4.6% or 3.9% after adjustments and impairment losses.

Bugs are not limited to demo

Bing’s AI bugs don’t just occur during demonstrations at events. Now that thousands of users have access to an AI-powered search engine, even more egregious mistakes are being made.

In an exchange posted on Reddit, Bing AI got confused and claimed that the current year was 2022 instead of 2023. Bing said: “Sorry, but today is not 2023. Today is 2022.to which the Bing user replied that his phone was showing the year as 2023. Bing suggested checking the phone’s settings to make sure the device wasn’t infected with a virus or bug that might be causing the date issue.
