The US Air Force successfully tested the autonomous fighter for 17 hours, confirming its successful use in special operations. The X-62A Variable Stability In-Flight (VISTA) test aircraft model, which uses artificial intelligence as the basis for executing given orders, performed several complex maneuvers and went through twelve different types of tests to prove its capabilities. It was used in December 2022 at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
According to the director of research at the US Air Force Test Pilot School, Dr. W. Malcolm Kotting, he is ready for action. “The X-62A VISTA team has proven they are capable of performing challenging AI-assisted test missions, accelerating development and autonomy testing capabilities for the Department of Defense.” The aircraft was flown by a pilot in case it needed to be taken out of service urgently.
Air Force officials also determine the importance of the entire process. “After training our AI agents on solutions using high performance computing and simulation, it is imperative that the flight of these vehicles takes into account the difference between simulators and the real world. Having an aircraft like the X-62A is essential to test their autonomous behavior.”

X-62A VISTA is an updated legacy model.

The X-62A VISTA may be new, but it is an updated design of older aircraft that have been used in different eras. It was conceived in 1992 as a Block 30 F-16D and was used as a two-seat aircraft used by Edwards AFB for pilot training. In 2021, it was changed to the NF16-D version for special tests and then converted again, now to the model we see, using artificial intelligence for operations.
Lieutenant Colonel Ryan “Hal” Khefron states that all information will be verified at this stage. “We didn’t encounter any major issues, but we found differences related to the simulation results. This was expected in the transition from the virtual to the real. These points are important for us to understand not only the tests done in advanced autonomous flight, but we also learned about VISTA, which allowed us to learn lessons and iterate much faster than with any other aircraft.”
