According to the scientists, this is the most accurate evidence of the existence of water and waves that they managed to see during the entire mission.
“We went through thousands of feet of lake sediment and we’ve never seen such evidence, and now we found it in a place where we expected it to be dry,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Southern California.
Since last fall, the rover has been exploring an area of what scientists call “sulfate-bearing” rock. Scientists believe this salt-rich region was formed when an ancient lake nearly dried up.
The waves are said to form at the bottom of the shallow lake as winds on Mars create ripples on the surface of the lake, disturbing the sediment below. Over time they turned into rocks.
The discovery means that the 5 kilometer-high Mount Sharp that Curiosity is exploring was once filled with lakes and streams.
As Ukrinform reports, NASA’s Curiosity rover has found a rare metallic meteorite in Gale Crater on the Red Planet.
