Apple has filed a patent for converting text messages to audio using your voice

According to information disclosed by Patently Apple, Apple has filed a new patent that offers converting text messages to audio, but with the user’s voice. The idea is to let the recipient convert the text message to audio and hear it in the sender’s voice. It is currently possible to transcribe text messages to audio, but is read by Siri.

To make this possible, the user will need to share a voice file with the necessary data for the iPhone to mimic the sender’s voice. Although a patent has been registered, this does not mean that the technology will be put into practice. But it will be interesting to see if the company can implement AI that can mimic the user’s voice and read any text message. Recently, Apple also acquired a patent for a smart watch with a camera, indicating the company’s investment in new technologies.

Read audio without using Siri voice

Currently, Siri can read texts received in iMessage, just select the “Read text message” option. In addition, Siri also allows the user to dictate a response, so it will convert it to text. The resource is useful and offers practicality, especially in those moments when it is impossible to pick up a smartphone in hand to continue typing.

The new patent, however, attempts to add a new level of interoperability to the functionality. Document Apple describes the technology as follows.: “In response to receiving a message from a contact named ‘John’, the user may want to hear the message in John’s voice, which enhances the user experience and increases device efficiency by eliminating the need for the user to read the received message.[….]”.

To be able to copy the sender’s voice, you must provide data in audio format to imitate the voice. We don’t know yet how Apple is going to do this, but if the tool that can imitate the voice seems too complicated for you, don’t be fooled. Microsoft has now released results from an AI capable of imitating any voice and intonation in just 3 seconds of audio. Although it seems complicated, the Apple patent is not far from reality.
