According to a senior TikTok executive, such a move would help alleviate concerns about the security of user data and ease regulatory pressure on the company.
TikTok has tried to reassure governments and regulators that users’ personal data cannot be accessed and their content cannot be manipulated by the Chinese Communist Party or anyone under the influence of Beijing.
Rich Waterworth, TikTok’s general manager of European operations, said in a blog post that the TikTok app, owned by China’s private internet conglomerate ByteDance, aims to expand its data storage space in Europe.
He added that the company is currently in the early stages of completing a second data center in Ireland in addition to the site announced last year.
According to Waterworth, the company plans to negotiate the creation of a third data center in Europe.
Migration of data of TikTok users in Europe will begin in 2023 and end in 2024.
On Friday, the company also reported 125 million monthly active users in the EU between August 2022 and January 2023. Such figures have led to stricter EU rules on online content known as the Digital Services Act.
As reported by Ukrinform, TikTok has pledged to increase counteracting disinformation about the Russia-Ukraine war.
