“The FBI is aware of the incident and is working to obtain more information,” the US Department of Homeland Security told BleepingComputer. “This is a single localized incident. As this is an ongoing investigation, the FBI has no further comment at this time.”

CNN first reported on Friday that there was a hacking incident involving the FBI’s computer system used to investigate child sexual abuse in New York City. An FBI official was not available for comment when BleepingComputer contacted them earlier today to ask for more details.

In November 2021, the FBI’s email servers were also hacked. After the breach, the attackers sent tens of thousands of spam messages in multiple waves from eims@ic.fbi.gov, a legitimate email address associated with the FBI’s Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal (LEEP).

While these emails had reached at least 100,000 mailboxes, this was a very modest estimate because the campaign was “potentially much, much larger,” according to the nonprofit spam tracker SpamHaus.
