WhatsApp introduces picture-in-picture support for iPhone video calls

WhatsApp Messenger is launching support for picture-in-picture mode in its latest app update, which allows users to continue a video call in a small window while doing something else on their iPhone. Until now, if you needed to do something on your phone during a WhatsApp video call, you had to swipe from WhatsApp, which paused the video for the person you were talking to.

With the new support available to you, if you swipe out of a video call, it will automatically crash into a picture-in-picture window, visible even while accessing other apps, so you and the other person you’re talking to can continue your conversation without making the ‌iPhone‌ unusable again.

In December, WhatsApp said it was working on improving support for picture-in-picture mode to allow WhatsApp users to simultaneously use and use other apps while on a video call. Picture-in-picture offered on iPhones with iOS 14 will work with apps that play video content, but for third-party apps, app developers need to support this feature.

The latest update, version 23.3.77, brings with it many other major improvements, including the ability to add signatures when sending documents, and additional support for longer group threads and comments. WhatsApp says these features will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
