The launch of Twitter Blue caused quite a bit of controversy, understandably so, as it involved the implementation of a payment verification system that had a basic monthly fee of 8 euros. The move had a very clear goal of increasing Twitter’s revenue and profitability, and Mark Zuckerberg liked the idea so much that Meta’s CEO didn’t hesitate “customize” and implement on your social networks.
This adaptation process, even if we could talk about it clearly a direct copy of the ideagave rise to birth “Meta verified”, a label with a blue icon indicating that the account has been verified by the company and is therefore official and belongs to and reliably represents a person or company. The verification icon plays a very important role in this regard as it helps in the fight against phishing and fake accounts.
This new metadata validation process will be used on Facebook and Instagram accounts, and will be paid in both cases. We don’t know how much they will cost in Spain, as at the moment this program has only been launched in Australia and New Zealand in the testing phase, but after a direct conversion from Australian dollars to Euros, we see that the basic option to change the site will cost 7.75 euros and the mobile version will increase to 16.14 euros.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself noted that with this new service, verified users will have a Enhanced protection against account spoofing and identity theft, a service that every social network should offer for free and that will have access to a special form of customer support. In theory, this will make Meta and Instagram more secure and will soon expand to other countries.
To activate this verification it will be necessary for us to identify ourselves with an official government document, in Spain a DNI would be enough for a natural person. We’re not sure what will happen to existing accounts that were verified for free, but basically your situation should not change.
The truth is that I am not at all surprised by this move by Meta. The company has been around for quite some time. was losing money on several fronts, its investment in metaversion was widely questionedand its ad revenue performance hasn’t been the best either. However, the value of its shares has recovered in recent weeks, and the American giant managed to put a stop to November, when its shares fell below $90. At the time of writing, they were over $170.
Will Meta be successful with this payment verification program? When we see the results that Twitter has achieved with its “blue” program, we might think not, but we have to remember that we are talking about very different social networks and that in the case of Facebook and Instagram, this verification program could have been more attractive for certain user profiles.
