The UK Competition and Markets Authority, CMA in its initials in English, referred to a possible new device or new Nintendo platform in its latest documents related to the investigation it is conducting into Microsoft’s purchase of Activision-Blizzard.
The documents, which refer to a possible new device or a new Nintendo platform, are part of the supplementary material to the already mentioned investigation. The appendices contain data for the calculation of market shares used in the regulator’s provisional findings and shares of cloud gaming service offerings. But focusing on what we’re really concerned about in this post, CMA (doesn’t) mention a possible Nintendo Switch Pro that hasn’t been announced yet:
“Nintendo Switch Online has been excluded from our events because Nintendo’s cloud gaming service is very limited. Nintendo’s cloud gaming service is only available on Nintendo Switch and [recortado]. Nintendo Switch Online gives players access to online play and cloud saves, among other things. That’s why we see Nintendo Switch Online primarily as an online multiplayer service rather than a cloud gaming service.”
An excerpt from a UK CMA document mentioning the possible existence of a new Nintendo console or platform.
What is the delisted device or platform? Although there is a possibility that the CMA left out or scrapped the old platform, it is more logical to think that the Big N of video games is preparing a new device that would also use the Nintendo Switch Online service, which would more or less to be in line with certain predictions that point to a new console announcement in 2024.
Nintendo is a company that tends to keep what it does very secret, so it’s unknown what it will actually do in the future. A few months ago, Digital Foundry reported that the Switch Pro had been canceled and analyst Piers Harding-Rolls predicted a Nintendo Switch 2 until 2024.
Nothing is known yet about the features of Nintendo’s next console, but it is possible to think that the partnership with NVIDIA will continue to have access to DLSSa technology that could open up huge possibilities at the level of graphics deployment and with 4K support, but it is still too early for that.
The Nintendo Switch marked the Big N’s exit from the desktop console market and bet everything on the sector where it had always been dominant, i.e. portable, albeit with a hybrid approach that allowed it to carve out a niche in the market it had exclusively occupied until recently (at least in terms of market share market). However, the appearance of the Steam Deck has given the impression among the public that Nintendo’s console is no longer alone in the hybrid console segment and also has the advantages of a standard PC, so a wrong move by the Japanese company may mean the takeoff of Valve’s mini-PC.
