A dark, tall asteroid passed by Earth

Scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California studied an asteroid called 2011 AG5, which passed by Earth about 1.8 million kilometers away on Feb. This was announced in a press release posted on the Phys.org website.

The asteroid was tracked using the Long Distance Space Communication Network. The space rover’s height is shown to be approximately 500 meters long and approximately 150 meters wide, comparable to the Empire State Building.

According to astronomers, this object is the longest of 1,040 asteroids ever observed with radar to approach Earth. The 2011 AG5 has subtle dark and light zones that can show small features of terrain at least a few tens of meters wide.

If the asteroid were observed with the naked eye, it would appear as dark as coal. Observations also confirmed that 2011 AG5 had a low spin speed and took nine hours to complete one revolution. The asteroid orbits the Sun in 621 days and will fly approximately 1.1 million kilometers from Earth in 2040. Source
