Samsung has developed a new security system called Samsung Message Guard to help Galaxy smartphone users protect themselves from so-called “zero clicks” that use malicious image files. The Korean tech giant says its new security system can detect these threats when they hit a device in the form of a message and stop them before they do any harm.

Exploiting vulnerabilities without clicking

Zero-Click exploits are advanced threats that take advantage of a vulnerability without requiring any user interaction. Typically, attacks based on zero-click exploits involve sending a message or file containing malicious code to trigger a vulnerability on the device that gives the attacker access without opening the victim message or file.

Known zero-click attacks targeted journalists and activists using Pegasus NSO spyware using KISMET and FORCEDENTRY vulnerabilities in Apple’s iMessage. Apple sought to mitigate these security threats by introducing Lockdown Mode, an operating mode designed for high-risk individuals that limits functionality and increases device security.

Samsung Message Guard

Samsung Message Guard is an isolated sandbox on smartphone that acts as a temporary storage place for new image files in PNG, JPG/JPEG, GIF, ICO, WEBP, BMP and WBMP formats. The system scans the files to determine if they are hiding malicious code. If so, they are quarantined and prevented from accessing or interacting with the host OS.

“Samsung Message Guard automatically neutralizes any potential threats lurking in image files before they have a chance to harm you,” Samsung explains in the feature’s announcement. “It also works silently and almost invisibly in the background and does not need to be activated by the user” – Samsung

The new security system adds to Samsung’s existing multiple layers of protection, specifically Samsung Knox, which can offer real-time threat detection and malware protection. Samsung Message Guard is immediately available for the Galaxy S23, which launched on Friday, and will gradually roll out to other Galaxy devices with One UI 5.1 or later in 2023.
