Microsoft has been testing a version of Edge with a built-in VPN service for about a year. The company has now rolled out this feature to some users in the latest stable release. The new feature, called Secure Network, was implemented in partnership with Cloudflare and provides users with 1GB of secure VPN traffic as part of the free plan. The fact that this feature has reached the final stages of implementation indicates that Microsoft will soon announce the pricing and full version of Edge Secure Network.
The Secure Network VPN feature highlights the privacy benefits of using a VPN, rather than the ability to circumvent regional restrictions by changing a user’s IP address. The service automatically selects servers in the user’s region for secure operation on public networks. In other words, users can only use a secure network to protect their privacy.
According to Edge 110 screenshots that have surfaced online, the VPN service supports three operating modes: “Selected sites”, “Optimized” and “All sites”. This means that users will have the option to choose which sites they want to protect with the VPN or to enable the VPN for all sites. It’s worth noting that Google added a free VPN to its Pixel 7 series smartphones late last year, but Microsoft’s decision to integrate VPN directly into their browser is a significant step forward that could lead to more VPN usage among users.
