If you’ve been thinking about getting one of the classic Sonic titles on Steam for a while now, no doubt the best part is that you do it as soon as possible. And it’s because, as we can read in The Verge, some of the saga’s classics will leave the digital stores, ending the opportunity to buy them with their prices and current status.
The titles that will disappear from digital stores are Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles a Sonic CD, all are currently available on Steam and the estimated date of withdrawal from the store is next May 20, which leaves less than a month to obtain them. At this point, we need to keep in mind that even if the game is no longer for sale on Steam, users who already have it in their catalog will be able to play and install it from Steam servers without restriction.
And what is the reason for its withdrawal from the store? Well, if you’re more or less up to date with the gaming market, you’ve probably already imagined it. Indeed, the reason is the next release of Sonic Originsremastered edition of just those titles that will go on sale on June 23 (a month and three days after the release of the classic from the store) and this includes exactly the same four titles whose original versions will disappear from the stores.

This is not the first time we have seen movements of this type. Rockstar, for example, did the GTA Remastered Trilogy, the unfortunate remastered edition of Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas. In an effort to secure more sales for this reissue, the company removed the originals from digital stores, providing another cause for anger to players who now have the sole option of a remaster.
In this case, although the movement is similar, at least Sega warned in time, which gives users about a month to get the original versions of Sonic. Of course, it would be ideal for both versions to remain available and users to be free to choose the one they prefer, and all distributors should do so in these cases. But what has been said, at least warned and given some extra time to buy them, could be much worse.
