A good plane ride is the fastest way to get anywhere, whether it’s for vacation or work. But let’s face it, flying can be quite stressful for some people.

With questions like this in mind, EmbraerBrazilian manufacturer of commercial aircraft, has applied for a patent for a system that “massagebrain during flight.

Embraer patent for transcranial stimulation system

Flying can be dreadful, especially when it comes to economy class, which the vast majority of people travel in. Therefore, technology that can turn a trip into something more relaxing is highly welcome.

Patent application “brain stimulation system to ensure well-being” was held in 2016 and awarded in 2022. According to Embraer, “many people get nervous on long car, train and plane trips, turning a short trip into a long one“.

The system is described as:

• A camera that scans the face of an occupant in a vehicle seat, providing an image of their facial expressions;
• This facial expression analysis tool will be able to identify the emotions of the passenger;
• An interface that could offer suffering passengers a form of non-invasive transcranial stimulation, including electrically-based direct current stimulation, magnetic stimulation, and pulsed ultrasound.

Magnetic stimulation or transcranial current techniques are used to treat diseases such as depression and other mental disorders. There are non-invasive devices for home use that have a similar effect. It would be great if airline customers had access to such technologies. But it’s clear that a camera scanning you and capturing your emotions could spark some ethical discussions.
