Microsoft announced in a blog post on Monday that it is exploring how ChatGPT can help robotics. The goal is to allow people to interact with robots in a simpler way, without having to learn complex programming or details about robotic systems..
“Our goal in this study is to see if ChatGPT can think about the physical world beyond text and reasoning to help with robotics tasks. We want to help people interact with robots more easily, without having to learn programming languages. systems,” Microsoft said in a publication.
Microsoft recently released a new set of design principles for using large language models like ChatGPT to provide instructions to robots. The company started by defining a list of high-level tasks that the robot could perform, wrote a ChatGPT query to translate the robot into speech, and then ran a robot simulation following the instructions.
After testing and tweaking the instructions until the robot follows them correctly, Microsoft deploys the finished code to the actual robot. This approach simplifies robot programming, allowing even users with no programming experience to create robot instructions. In addition, the Microsoft team is working on improving ChatGPT learning so that it can better understand the nuances of natural language.
Robot programming is a tricky field, but Microsoft is tackling human-robot interactions and posting videos of its progress. The team is working on improving this interaction and making programming more intuitive. See an example in the video below from 59 seconds.
