For the first time, astronomers have identified evidence of a pair of dwarf galaxies with giant black holes colliding with each other. Actually, they didn’t just find a couple, they found two. The first pair of dwarf galaxies to merge is in the Abell 133 cluster, about 760 million light-years from Earth, and the other in the Abell 1758S galaxy cluster, about 3.2 billion light-years away.

It is hoped that these observations and further research will uncover some of the mysteries of the very early universe, a time when these dwarf galaxy pairs colliding with black holes were much more common.

“Astronomers have found many examples of black holes on a collision course in relatively close large galaxies, but searching for them in dwarf galaxies is much more difficult and has so far failed,” said University of Alabama astrophysicist Marko Micic. study.

What makes these observations difficult is that the smaller size of these galaxy pairs means that fainter light trails are more difficult to see. These galaxies contain stars with a total mass of about 3 billion times the mass of the Sun, while our Milky Way contains about 60 billion suns.

To make this discovery, the researchers combined data from several telescopes: X-ray results from Chandra, infrared results from WISE, and optical results from the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope. The X-ray data, which collects the larger signals emitted by black hole pairs, were crucial.

The Abell 133 merger looks much further ahead – so much so that it has only one nickname – Mirabilis. This came after the extinction of hummingbird species known for their very long tails, due to the long tail observed around this collision-induced galaxy pair.
