South Korea’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced the launch of a new supercomputer with artificial intelligence. Located on the campus of Korea University in Seoul, it has 35 petaflops of computing power and allows nearly a hundred researchers to work on their projects simultaneously.
Currently, 631 scientists are involved in the government’s artificial intelligence research project, which studies areas such as hyperscale deep learning, spatio-temporal thinking, and speech synthesis.
“On the basis of the innovation center’s data center with high-performance computing infrastructure, world-leading achievements in artificial intelligence research will be created and disseminated … international cooperation network in the field of artificial intelligence research”said Deputy Minister Park Yun-gyu.
Korean authorities plan to invest an additional 44.5 billion won ($34.9 million) in the data center to build a global national network with other regional universities, businesses and research institutes. Such a center is expected to help South Korea keep pace with the rapidly changing artificial intelligence industry. Some tech giants have already announced plans to reuse their data centers for AI projects and workloads, and IBM has decided to host the Vela AI supercomputer in the public cloud.
