Because two em’s are better than one: MuyComputer is already in Mastodon

Call us MuyComputer, call us MC… Call us what you want, but call us what the song would say if it was a song. But it’s not. It is a warning for navigators, especially for those who are users the thriving social network Mastodonin which we recently launched and in which we of course encourage anyone who is interested to follow us.

As everyone knows, Mastodon is a kind of free Twitter clone with its own quirks. The two that define it are firstly that it is based on open source software and secondly its nature as a decentralized or rather federated platform. This basically means that its operation as a service does not depend on a single provider, so it is common for Mastodon users to use different servers.

For example, the server on which we created the MC account is the main one:

However, it doesn’t matter if you’ve logged in to another one, because that one is most likely linked: that is, federated.

Why jump into Mastodon now? We’ve been following the journey of our colleagues at MuyLinux and it seems like a good time for this, although if Mastodon is on top, it’s because of all the turbulence that Twitter is going through after being acquired by Elon Musk. There are a lot of details to the story and we covered it for a long time, but that would be the summary.

Twitter’s problems didn’t come with Elon Musk, nor can it be said that Elon Musk hasn’t tried to solve them… generating more, perhaps minor, but very noticeable, given the character’s quirky style. Hence the journey from Twitter to Mastodon. In that regard, if it goes along with what was said this coming week, Twitter’s algorithm will be released under an open source license.

In short, Twitter, with its past and present problems, is and will continue to be a reference, but because of all the fuss that has arisen, an alternative like Mastodon has come to the fore, which is always good news, because alternatives are positive, especially if, like Mastodon, they have bet to more transparent development models.

But make no mistake: Mastodon is an alternative to Twitter technically, but not in everything else… at least for now. That’s why it doesn’t hurt to support her in a subtle way, that is, without leaving Twitter, where most people continue to be. We’ll see if that changes later.

In any case, whether the code is more or less free, follows a federated or centralized model, there are people behind each platform who ultimately impose their point of view. In that sense, Twitter and Mastodon are essentially the same. The idea of Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, was to create an open source and decentralized network, but he failed.

Be that as it may, you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, Instagram… and now also on Mastodon. Although if you ask me, RSS and email subscription are the most attractive methods, depending on whether you want everything at once or prefer to have only the best selected for you.
