The race to take over the satellite device market attracted a new entrant on Friday (24th) when the British smartphone company Bullitt has released two new devices capable of sending text messages through space. The two new smartphones feature 5G connectivity, a 6.6-inch screen, and a 5,000mAh battery that the company says can last up to two full days. To send a message, the phone contacts geostationary satellites about 35,406 km above the equator and is then rerouted to the terrestrial network infrastructure and finally delivered to the recipient.

Receiving messages is similar to standard SMS, but you need to install Bullitt Messenger, the company’s proprietary satellite messaging app, to reply. It takes about 10 seconds to send a message, which is significantly slower than the near-instantaneous speed of conventional cell phones.

The satellite connection is activated only when the user is out of range of Wi-Fi or mobile network signals, ensuring the availability of communication in remote or hard-to-reach places.

Bullitt charges a fee for using the two-way satellite service. The basic plan, which includes 30 messages per month, costs 4.99 euros (equivalent to 27.36 reais). The plan with 125 messages per month costs 9.99 euros (equivalent to 54.83 reais), while the plan with 400 messages per month costs 29.99 euros (equivalent to 164.33 reais).

The market can transform

Although satellite phones have been in development for decades, they are not yet a mainstream device. Bullitt, however, hopes to change this scenario with new releases. As a rule, satellite phones have an unattractive design with large visible antennas. However, the new Bullitt phones are different.

Thanks to the Taiwanese company MediaTek’s satellite-enabled chip, they look like ordinary smartphones. The British company believes that with this new design and enhanced features, it will be able to popularize the use of satellite phones.

It is worth recalling that Apple announced that its latest release of the iPhone 14 has an innovative feature for communicating with emergency services via satellite. Initially, this feature will be available in select countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany, and Ireland.
