Motorola developed the Defy Satellite Link keychain that adds satellite messaging to any smartphone. The same can be found on the iPhone 14 series.
The keychain integrates with Bullitt Satellite Messenger (BSM), a service that lets you exchange messages even when there is no cellular connection. The user writes the text of the message to BSM and the Defy Satellite Link key fob sends it via satellite. The recipient does not need to install the program, he will receive the text sent to him in the form of a regular SMS.
However, such a luxury will cost users dearly. The minimum plan for Essential is $4.99 per month. Includes 30 messages and the ability to communicate with FocusPoint International, the international SOS service for 12 months. The organization’s specialists receive distress signals and connect users to emergency services.
The keychain is protected against the ingress of dust and moisture according to the IP68 standard. It can operate in the temperature range of -5 to 55 °C. According to the developers, the battery with a capacity of 600 mAh is enough for several days of work. The keychain weighs about 68 grams. The gadget connects to a smartphone using Bluetooth. The app requires at least Android 10 or iOS 14.
Motorola Defy Satellite Link comes with a GPS sensor. Without connecting to a smartphone, the key fob can send information about the last known location, which can save a person’s life in certain situations.
Sales are scheduled to begin in April this year. A “naked” keychain will be available for $99. If you pay an additional $50 for the gadget itself, the buyer gets a one-year subscription to the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app.
