This Monday (27) Qualcomm announced during a presentation at Mobile World Congress that it is working with Honor, Motorola, Nothing, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi to add satellite functionality to phones.. The partnership between the chipmaker and other companies will be made possible by the Snapdragon Satellite.

Qualcomm expects to make Snapdragon Satellite available to all future 5G Modem-RF systems and Snapdragon Mobile Platform Tiers (Layer 8-4) as the technology matures. While the company hasn’t set a launch date for the technology on devices, it’s already known where it will appear thanks to a partnership announced this Monday..

Announced at CES 2023, the Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite is the world’s first two-way satellite messaging solution for smartphones. This technology provides global off-network coverage for emergencies, similar to Apple’s solution for satellite messaging.

Communication even without operator signal

Snapdragon Satellite technology allows phones to connect to a satellite in space to send and receive messages when there is no carrier coverage. This two-way communication option is especially useful in remote areas where you need to contact emergency services, send an SMS message, or communicate in situations where the operator’s signal is weak.

Qualcomm said the focus of the technology is on innovation and empowering consumers. In addition, the incorporation of this new technology into the next generation allows communication in accordance with the constellation of satellites orbiting the Earth.

“By incorporating Snapdragon Satellite into next generation devices, our partners will be able to offer satellite messaging capabilities with a mature and commercially available LEO global constellation that can enable subscribers around the world to communicate outdoors with service providers as well as family. and friends,” said Francesco Grilli, vice president of product management at Qualcomm.

Although this week’s new product is largely relevant for mobile devices, it is possible that it can be used on other platforms. This is because Qualcomm has said it intends to use this type of technology in the computer and automotive segments, for example.
