Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass were one of the most interesting surprises of what we have so far from MWC 2023, and it is the most successful release to date. And I say that it was one of the most interesting announcements, because although it is always interesting to know about renovation devices that we already know, it is undeniable that the presentation of concepts and prototypes is always particularly attractive, because it opens the doors of research laboratories for us technology and reveals its vision of the future.

That’s the case with these Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass Discovery Edition, well, that’s its full name and so far they’re just that, a proof of concept that won’t hit the market in general, but it tells us what Xiaomi is working on in this regard and what we can expect from this type of device in the medium term. And what we can see is probably one of the most promising designs we’ve seen so far when it comes to augmented reality.

We can already find the first relevant news in his name, and this is it we are talking about a wireless browser so that it will not be limited to the immediate surroundings of the PC for its use. Instead, it connects to Xiaomi 13 or other devices compatible with Snapdragon Spaces. This is because they rely on Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 technology for connectivity. Thanks to its use offer a wireless delay of just 3 milliseconds and full link latency of just 50 milliseconds.

However, the strength of these Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glasses is found in their screens, which according to the company are at the “Retina” level, for which Xiaomi decided to mount two separate Micro OLED panels with a brightness of up to 1200 nits with electrochromic technology that allows you to dynamically adjust the level of transparency to ensure greater external visibility when interacting with external elements and a more isolated experience when we want to view content of any kind.

A key aspect to providing an augmented reality experience is that we are unable to visually distinguish real elements from viewer-generated elements, something in which an angular resolution of 60 pixels per degree (PPD, Pixels Per Degree) must be achieved. ). There are no devices yet that hit that sweet spot, but according to the company, the Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass is very close. with an angular resolution of 58 pixels per degree.

Design is also a very important element, since we are talking about a type of wearable device aimed at continuous use. To make this possible, Xiaomi opted for light and durable materials, creating a magnesium-lithium alloy structure that is complemented by some parts made of carbon fiber. Thanks to their choice, despite their size, the Xiaomi Wireless AR Smart Glass weighs only 126 grams including silicon-oxygen anode battery.

Xiaomi also wanted to focus, and rightly so, on its control system, which is at least as futuristic as the viewfinder design itself. The cameras integrated in it are able to identify the phalanges of the user’s hand, so that he can use gestures to control the operation of the device with his hands. So yes, as we’ve seen so many times in science fiction, we can control devices simply with hand movements (no touch of course, the latter has been around for decades).
