But the number of attacks in January also reached its highest level in three years. This is according to figures from the NCC Group.
British cyber insurance company NCC Group provides monthly figures on the number of ransomware attacks worldwide. January has traditionally been a “quieter” month when it comes to cybercrime, and this year proves it once again. The NCC Group counted 165 incidents in the first month of 2023; that is a good 38 percent less than in December 2022.
Don’t use this statistic as an excuse to lower your alertness because if you compare to previous years, January 2023 was the busiest January in three years. One in three attacks, or 34 percent, took place in Europe, putting our continent second only to North America (41%). With a share of 30 percent, industrial companies are the most popular victims.
NCC Group also analyzes which hacking groups are most active. That was a long way back in January from Lockbit 3.0, a group that has been exploring the environment for some time. The Russian group Vice Society made itself known with attacks on universities and academic institutions. The report considers “AcridRain” as a new threat, the group works with malware that steals passwords from victims.
