Canadian government employees are no longer allowed to use the TikTok app on phones and other devices provided to them by their employer.
The decision was made for cybersecurity and comes into effect on Tuesday, Canadian media outlet National Post reports. There are concerns from the Canadian government over how the Chinese-originated app collects data from users. The government speaks of an “unacceptable risk” to privacy and security. As a precaution, the social media platform is therefore automatically removed from the devices and blocked.
TikTok said it was disappointed that the ban was introduced “without citing specific safety concerns or contacting the company to discuss concerns before making a decision.” The Canadian decision comes shortly after the European Commission issued a similar ban. The United States has had a TikTok ban on national government devices since last year. Other countries are also considering banning TikTok on government employees’ work phones.
