Microsoft introduced a new feature for Windows 11 that allows iPhone users to connect their phones to Windows PCs and access various features from their devices. Let’s call this feature Phone Link for iPhone, it’s currently only available for preview as part of the Windows Insiders program.
According to Microsoft, Phone Link works by installing an additional app on your iPhone that connects to your PC via Bluetooth. Once connected, users can view and manage their phone’s notifications in the Action Center on their computers. They can also reply to text messages using the Phone Link app on PC, which syncs with the Messages app on iPhone. However, it should be noted that Phone Link for iPhone does not support replying to group messages or sending media in messages.
However, it is unclear when Phone Link for iPhone will be available to all Windows 11 users or what other features it will offer. Microsoft says it’s working on adding more features to Phone Link over time. For example, in Phone Link for Android phones, users can drag and drop photos from their phone to their PC using File Explorer or other apps.
Phone Link is one of the many new features Microsoft introduced in Windows 11, which was released in October 2021. The new operating system also has a redesigned Start menu that centers icons and shows recommended files and programs; The new Microsoft Store, offering more apps and games, including Android apps, via the Amazon App Store; support for widgets that display personalized information; enhanced performance and security; and more.
Windows Insiders can try Phone Link for iPhone by updating the Phone Link app to version 1.23012.169.0 or later. To participate in the Windows Evaluation Program, users must sign in with a Microsoft account and enable build preview in Settings > Windows Update > Windows Evaluation Program. Users should be aware that previous builds may have bugs or issues affecting their device.
Phone Link is similar to Apple’s Continuity system, allowing users to easily switch between Mac computers and iPhones. Continuity supports features like making phone calls, sending SMS messages, using apps like Safari or Notes, copying and pasting content, unlocking devices with Apple Watch, and more. However, Phone Link for iPhone does not yet support these features.
Phone Link aims to make it easier for Android and iPhone users to work without having to switch between their devices. It also showcases Microsoft’s efforts to make Windows 11 more compatible with different platforms and ecosystems. It is not yet clear whether Phone Link will be useful or popular among iPhone users.
