According to the Bloomberg news agency, investigators are currently investigating possible links between the former ASML employee who withheld information and the Chinese government. Chip machine maker ASML recently reported that an employee working in China had stolen data on the Dutch company’s technology.

According to two Bloomberg sources who wish to remain anonymous, investigators believe the former employee has ties to a Chinese state-backed organization. The same organization would previously have been linked to intellectual property theft. It is unclear which group this is.

Among other things, US government officials would investigate the data breach. ASML says in a response that it is conducting its own investigation and will not elaborate further on it now.

Key Position ASML

ASML accounts for more than 90 percent of all chip machines worldwide that work with lithography, in which light beams create extremely fine-meshed patterns on chips. This makes the company an important link in the global production of advanced semiconductors that are being used in more and more devices.

For example, ASML is the only company in the world that manufactures the most advanced machines for manufacturing chips, the so-called EUV machines. The Dutch company has not been allowed to export these to China for some time. The United States, the Netherlands and Japan recently agreed that certain next-to-last generation devices, DUV devices, can no longer be sold to Chinese companies.

The US has been increasing pressure to limit the export of high-quality chip technology to China since last year. The Americans claim that this should prevent China from producing overly advanced weapons.
