Around midnight, a commercial and passenger train collided, killing 26 people, at least 85 people, including 25 in serious condition, the Greek fire service said.
A fire broke out after the crash, so rescuers had to work between the flames
The circumstances that caused the accident have not yet been clarified.
According to local authorities, there were 350 passengers on the train.
“Cars one and two do not exist. Due to the severity of the clash, they were expelled,” Kostas Agorastos, the regional governor of Thessaly, told ERT, adding that there were people with burns and injuries among the victims.
40 ambulances arrived at the scene, treating many of the victims, who were transferred to the university hospital in Larisa and the hospital in Katerinis.
In addition to firefighters, the police and army have mobilized rescue assistance by activating the alert protocol as planned in case of such accidents, according to the aforementioned chain.
