5G should only surpass 4G in the number of accesses in 2029; see the world projection

Technology introduced in Brazil in mid-2022 5G is on track to become the most used mobile phone in the world, but at a slow pace. According to GSMAassociation representing the interests of mobile operators on a global scale, the network must outperform 4G only in 2029.

The information was disclosed in a report at the opening Mobile World Congress (MVK), considered today’s biggest connectivity event, last Monday, 27. In percentage terms, 5G usage today is side by side with 3G and should distance itself over the next few years. A tie with 4G is predicted for 2028, followed by an overtake.

Correcting the numbers at the moment, 4G has about 60% of mobile network accesses, while 5G and 3G range from 15% to 20%. 2G remained in double digits in 2023 and will gradually decrease until it reaches an estimated 1% in 2030.

At the end of the current decade, 5G should not only overtake 4G, but also significantly distance itself, as 54% of hits are predicted for the last year of the chart against 36% for 4G, and 3G will also remain with a single figure at 8%.

With a world population of 8.5 billion by 2030, the absolute number of 5G users would be equivalent to about 4.6 billion users.

Growing Latin America and Brazil, but far from the main markets

The GSMA believes that America Latin will follow the global trend: 57% of mobile networks operate in 5G, compared to 35% in 4G and 8% in 3G. However, this number is much smaller than America from Northwhich should have 91% of hits using the latest technology compared to 7% for its predecessor.

For the association, vendor efforts to make devices cheaper should be key to the growth of 5G worldwide. “Emerging markets in Asia Pacific, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa will see the biggest growth in smartphone usage as they become more affordable. The initiatives are proving to be successful in increasing their use,” he said.

Both 3G and 2G are already in the process of being closed or discontinued in some countries. And, as the graph shows, they should continue their dizzying fall until they disappear forever.

IN Brazil, 5G should become popular in a few more years, although it is already active in all capitals. The obstacles are precisely the prices, which are not yet affordable for everyone, and the lack of coverage in some locations. In small towns, the network should be implemented only by the end of the decade.
