The Ministry of Health of the Dominican Republic released this Wednesday an epidemiological alert for chikungunya in light of outbreaks reported in several countries in the Americas, although no cases have been confirmed in the country.

Thus, the Caribbean country follows the recommendation of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which warned that outbreaks of chikungunya had a significant impact on public health and, given the high infestation of disease-carrying mosquitoes in the region, added to the great mobility of people, “there is a high risk of the spread of the virus on the American continent.”

He Ronald Skewes, director of epidemiology in the Dominican Republic, explained that 30,707 cases and 14 deaths from chikungunya have been reported in the past 4 weeks. in countries such as Brazil and Paraguay, it is therefore recommended that Member States step up preventive action to avoid death and complications.

The last major outbreak of chikungunya occurred in 2014, when 537,628 suspected cases were reported in the Dominican Republic, apart from the fact that 40% to 50% of symptomatic people did not require medical attention.

Eladio Perez, Deputy Minister of Collective Health of the Dominican Republic, pointed out that the main risk group in case of re-entry of the disease into the country is children and which were not affected in the last outbreak, as it is believed that the body remains immune to the disease.

Babies born after 2015 may be the hardest hit, said Perez, who called on the general population to take action to control the vector by eliminating breeding sites and fumigating homes, among other things.

Chikungunya is a disease transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito., the main carrier, and it’s similar to dengue fever.

It presents with body aches, malaise, fever, allergies, and, in the long term, joint pain.

Symptoms usually appear after an incubation period of three to seven days and usually disappear after seven to ten days, although joint pain and stiffness may occasionally persist for several months.
