Nicaragua bans processions during Holy Week

The National Police forbade the Catholic Church of Nicaragua to hold Via Crucis and various processions outside the temples on the occasion of Holy Week, and religious activities can only be performed in the premises of the parish.

The move comes amid crackdowns by President Daniel Ortega’s government against the church, which the president called last week “mafia” and “undemocratic” because it prevents Catholics from electing the pope, cardinals and bishops. and priests by direct vote.

In addition, Nicaragua celebrates National Journalist’s Day on March 1 this year, an activity that was also attacked during Ortega’s rule.

The Independent Journalists and Communicators of Nicaragua (PCIN) today released a study, Journalism in Nicaragua, a Declining Profession, documenting union insecurity, high risks in the profession, and self-censorship as a consequence of violence. and political persecution.

Although we were already aware of the high level of aggression against journalists, the report documents and confirms actions that harm the freedom of the press in Nicaragua.

Some of the key findings include that 66% of the people consulted continue to be professional while
that 34% have stopped working as journalists due to state persecution.

The investigation clarifies that 77% of those who devote themselves to reporting, “the majority live in exile in dangerous conditions” due to adverse conditions in Nicaragua.

“94% of journalists surveyed confirm that the state of Nicaragua is the main body of censorship,” the report says.

Similarly, 91% of those surveyed acknowledge that independent journalists in Nicaragua have been targeted and affected by lawsuits and a legal framework that is set to criminalize the profession.

“International press freedom organizations say that Nicaraguan journalism is at the most critical moment in its modern history. Over the past five years, this period has been marked by the closure of more than 50 media outlets, the imprisonment of journalists and the murder of journalist Ángel Gahon, whose case continues with impunity,” the report says.
