Vivid’s HDR picture mode is good for illustrating the extremes the TV can go to, but it doesn’t display the usual brightness of the OLED evo G3 in everyday use. According to LG, The TV will reach a brightness of 1470 nits in HDR Cinema mode., a mode that provides an authentic browsing experience for the user. By comparison, the Vivid G2 only achieves 1,000 nits of brightness in HDR mode. That being said, we’re seeing a significant jump in peak brightness that LG has been able to achieve with its newer models, giving it more competition with Samsung’s QD-OLED screens. Unfortunately, 2040 nits brightness won’t be available on all G3 sizes.
LG G3 with 2040 nits brightness
According to the manufacturer, the significant increase in brightness is due to MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology, which is a small layer of lenses that concentrate light from OLED materials and create a brighter screen. MLA has been implemented in third generation OLED panels and these are called META displays. Companies such as Philips and Panasonic will also use META screens in smart TVs to be released in 2023.
LG hasn’t explicitly confirmed if all sizes of the LG G3 will come in at 2040 nits, but has commented as follows: [G3] 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch are 70% brighter, 83-inch are 30% brighter.” it’s almost certain that the 83-inch version of the G3 won’t have MLA technology, being unable to achieve a brightness of 2040 nits. On the other hand, the 55-, 65-, and 77-inch versions should have a META display and reach a maximum brightness of 2040 nits. LG’s new smart TVs, including the C3 and Z3 models, will launch in 2023, but LG has yet to confirm a date.
LG says OLED screens are less prone to burn-in than QD-OLED panels QD-OLED panels burn out after only two months of heavy use, according to LG.
