Set 24 Channels Together with Rakuten, Viber has prepared useful tips to help users ensure their messengers are protected.

End-to-end encryption

All Viber chats are protected with end-to-end encryption from the first to the last message. This is a feature you don’t have to worry about: it’s enabled by default. What does it mean?

Decryption keys for chats and calls are stored only on users’ devices: messages cannot be intercepted and read, and are decrypted only on the interlocutors’ devices. Other people, even Viber employees, cannot access these keys, so calls and messages can only be read/listened by conversation participants.

With such a system, there is no need to activate additional security functions: end-to-end encryption is configured by default and reliably protects the confidentiality of correspondence. The same applies to 1-1 voice calls – third parties cannot access them.

Two-step authorization

Two-step authorization is similar to installing an additional lock on an apartment door. Of course it takes a little more time to open and close them, but the property will be more secure for storing valuables and people inside.

It is the same as accessing the Viber account that stores private information. Protecting your account with an email and password will be a major barrier to scammers if they get the phone. In addition, with two-step verification, only you can create a Viber account with your phone number.

How to activate:

  1. “Options”,
  2. “Privacy”,
  3. “Two-step verification.

Protect important chats with a PIN

If the phone is at risk of falling into the wrong hands (for example, during inspection in occupied territories), you should protect your important correspondence with a PIN code. Thus, when a third party unlocks the device and gains access to the Viber account, these chats will not be detected and read.

How to enable it on iOS:

  1. Click on the chat name at the top of the screen,
  2. “Hide this person”,
  3. “Set PIN code”.

How to enable it on Android:

  1. enter the chat,
  2. Settings (the three-dot symbol at the top right),
  3. “Chat Information”,
  4. “Hide this person”,
  5. “Set PIN code”.

Adding restrictions to groups

Spam in suspicious groups affects the experience and mood of using the messenger. In Viber, you can limit invitations to join groups only to users in your contact list.

This privacy setting will ensure information hygiene and make the use of messenger even more comfortable.

How to activate:

  1. “Options”,
  2. “Privacy”,
  3. “Add to group settings”.

Missing messages

This function is a guarantee that your messages will not reach third parties as they will be deleted within a certain period of time. Also, the recipient of such a message will not be able to take a screenshot on Android. On iOS: when you try to take a screenshot or forward an incomplete message, the sender receives a notification.

How to activate:

  1. Click the clock icon in 1 to 1 chat.
  2. Then set the desired timer: 10 seconds, 1 minute or 1 hour.

After this time, the message will disappear.

What else should you pay attention to?

Ability to hide photo and “Online” and “Viewed” status

To maintain a high level of privacy, you can hide your photo from users who are not in your contact list. This will reduce the number of spam requests and prevent your photos from falling into the wrong hands.

How to configure:

  1. “Options”,
  2. “Privacy”,
  3. “show photo”,
  4. Turn the feature off.

You can also hide Viber’s last visit time and “Online” status, but this feature can only be used once a day.

The “Displayed” option will also come in handy: when disabled, the user can read the message inconspicuously to the addressee. However, this function has the opposite effect: it doesn’t let you know if the messages you’ve sent have been viewed.

How to configure:

  1. “Options”,
  2. “Privacy”,
  3. “Browsed” and “Online” options,
  4. Turn them off by unchecking the box.
