According to the statements made by Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon at the 2023 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Apple is reportedly preparing to produce its own 5G modems for iPhones by 2024. In early February 2022, there were initial speculations that Apple would use its own 5G modem chips for the upcoming iPhone 15 series.
Although Apple currently uses Qualcomm modems in the iPhone 14 models, the company has been exploring the possibility of using its own parts for a while. Apple’s purchase of Intel’s modem business in 2019 led to news that it would start using its own modems this year.
Amon said that Qualcomm has no plans to supply modems to Apple in 2024, but emphasized that Apple will make the final decision. It also clarified that royalties are “independent of the supply of the chip,” and did not confirm whether Qualcomm would pay for QTL licenses if Apple switched to their own modems.
