According to EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, virtual worlds will be the next area where Europe should examine competitive relations.
“It’s time to ask what healthy competition in the metaverse would be,” Vestager said at a Keystone Strategy conference, according to Reuters.
The emergence of metaverses, virtual worlds that often extend beyond pure gaming environments, has not yet been accompanied by widespread consumer acceptance. But the name change from Facebook to Meta, and the intentions of several big players to be active there, has Vestager wondering what that landscape should look like in order for there to be enough competition.
On the side, she also wondered if the rise of generative AI like ChatGPT could transform the relationships between players and their virtual worlds.
