Plenary session The Peruvian Congress ratified this Friday its decision to re-evaluate possible electoral progress. general country after the rejection of a request to reconsider this measure, which was adopted at the close of the previous legislature on 17 February.

Request for review was represented by MP Jorge Montoya for the ultra-conservative Renovación Popular party and received 63 votes against, 41 for and 3 abstentions at the first plenary session of the new legislature.

“Therefore, the relevant process will continue” on the proposal new election project” Congressional President Jose Williams said after voting ended.

Pre-election progress is one of the main claims of anti-government protests They began last December in Peru, but so far Congress has not agreed to approve initiatives that proposed elections for 2023 or 2024, two of them from the executive branch and two more from various parliamentary benches, including Fujimori.

Supporting his request for a review, Montoya assured that the electoral progress could not be reviewed again and that Congress ‘intends to mutilate itself’ when making a motion to terminate his term early, to which he was originally elected until July 2026.

The legislator also argued that there was a “systematic campaign against Congress” and insisted that early elections were “an attack on legal security” and that legislators were not subject to an imperative mandate because their position could not be retracted.

This Thursday, Congressional President Jose Williamscalled for “thinking” with legislators from various benches to make a “best decision” in voting on the revision of the electoral advance.Congress approved on February 17, the last day of the previous legislature, that the Constitutional Commission had prepared a new draft for the advancement of the elections for evaluation in plenary session.

However, the chairman of this working group, Fujimorist Hernando Guerra Garciaannounced shortly after legislator Montoya proposed to reconsider this vote.

After that, Deputy Fujimori accused the “radical right” of obstructing the possibility of re-discussing the progress of the general legislative elections, which ended on the same day.

On February 20, Williams justified his decision not to immediately put Montoya’s request to a vote, as he felt that congressmen should have “time to reflect” to “calmly analyze” if they approved moving the general election forward.

“I believe that time for reflection is needed so that congressmen carefully consider this issue and that we do not rush into the draft (elections) for 2023, 2024 or 2026. I think calmness is convenient to be able to look at things well,” he said.
