Although the most anticipated new feature in Microsoft Edge is the debut of its artificial intelligence-based “copilot” mode powered by Prometheus, This is not the only interesting news that we can expect in the same in the short and medium term. Ever since Redmond decided to jump on Chromium, focusing the browser war on features and features instead of different engines, we’ve been able to see the consistency with which the company has substantially improved its browser.
A very common use of web browsers is video playback: social networks, websites that collect them, different kinds of platforms… with increasing bandwidth and lower storage costs, video has been used for years. It has become a major format on the internet and with the improvements in the screens we use to access said content, users are demanding ever higher quality.
Just a few days ago, we talked about RTX Video Super Resolution, NVIDIA’s development aimed at Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers, thanks to the company’s more than proven domain in artificial intelligence-based image scaling, will allow users to enjoy higher image quality when consuming this content. Currently compatible with the RTX 30 and RTX 40 series, this NVIDIA technology is compatible with major video services such as YouTube, Twitch, Disney+, Hulu and Netflix.
It seems that yes, NVIDIA is not the only company moving in this direction and that it already has its proposal more or less ready in this direction. And so it is, as we can read on the insider news page, Microsoft Edge is already testing its own Super Video Resolution technology. At the moment, this feature is in Edge Canary and, according to the company, it is deployed in 50% of users of this development version of the browser.
There are several differences between the solution presented by NVIDIA a few days ago and the one we now find in Microsoft Edge. The browser from Microsoft therefore scores thanks to a larger hardware scope, as its scope also extends to graphics cards AMD Radeon RX 5700 and later and graphics adapters GeForce with Tensor cores, i.e. RTX 20, 30 and 40. There is no mention of Intel graphics at this time.
However, Microsoft Edge VSR has some important limitations:
Does not support DRM protected content.
If used in a laptop, it must be connected to the mains, it does not work if it is powered by a battery.
Video must be at least 192 pixels in height and width.
Video must be played in 720p or higher.
For users using Canary who want to enable this feature manually, they will need to enable the following flag:
edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution
Whether you don’t know what Microsoft Edge flags are, or if you know what they are and want to discover some very interesting ones, Here we talk about five of them that you cannot miss.
