A Southwest Airlines plane bound for Fort Lauderdale from Havana was forced to return to Cuba’s Jose Marti Airport on Sunday after an engine caught fire after a bird strike, according to a video recorded on a passenger’s cell phone and media reports.
NBC 6 News in Florida reported that a spokesman for Southwest Airlines confirmed the incident.
“Southwest Flight 3923, flying from Havana, Cuba to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Sunday morning, was reportedly attacked by a bird on the aircraft’s engine and nose shortly after takeoff,” a spokesman for the news channel said.
Mobile phone footage shows smoke filling the cabin as panicked parents showed up explaining to their children how to put on oxygen masks.
Emergency lights inside the plane were turned on and footage showed passengers evacuating the plane using emergency slides on the runway of Cuba’s largest airport, with firefighters and trucks watching.
News reports say there are no serious injuries and all passengers are safe on the ground in Havana. (Reuters).
