The first deputy head of the National Association of the Defense-Industrial Complex of Ukraine, Ivan Vinnyk, said that the modified Vilkha-M tactical missile complex can hit targets at a distance of up to 150 km.
“Vilkha” is a Ukrainian tactical missile complex with 300 mm high-precision ammunition, developed on the basis of the Soviet 9K58 “Smerch” anti-aircraft missile system. The leading Ukrainian arms companies, including KB Promin, DAHK Artem, Pavlograd Chemical Plant, Oryzon-Navigation and others, worked on the creation of the complex.
The standard “Alder” missiles (product P624), used on the front since the first days of the war, have a range of up to 70 km and a warhead of 250 kg, compared with 92 km and 91 kg for the GMLRS M30. and M31 missiles of various modifications, which Ukraine received from its allies for the M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS MLRS systems.
The modified “Vilkha-M” missiles are superior to the GMLRS M30/M31 – the weight of the warhead is 170 kg, the damage range is up to 110 km. The new version of Vilkha-M1, mentioned by Ivan Vinnyk, has a range of 150 km when using a 170 kg warhead, and 110-120 km when using a 236 kg warhead. The more advanced “Vilkha-M2” (P624M-2) will be able to deliver a warhead weighing 170 kg to a range of up to 200 km.
According to Vinnyk, the modified missiles are already under development and will be tested in combat conditions during the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in eastern and southern Ukraine. “Tests will be held on the battlefield”– said.
Vilha and Vilha-M rockets are guided, flight correction is done using gas engines/rudders in front of the rocket. The launch of a pack of 12 missiles is carried out in 48 seconds, and in a salvo each missile is guided to its individual target with an aiming angle of 1.5 km. With a distance of more than 100 km, the circular possible deviation is 30 m.
The weight of the rocket is about 800 kg, the control system is 50 kg, the propulsion part is about 500 kg.
The warhead is unified, can be fitted with a high-explosive fragmentation, cluster or thermobaric charge weighing up to 250 kg.
It can be used to destroy both ground and surface targets, depending on missions. Presumably, the missile needs an infrared or radar homing head to hit surface maneuvering targets. The option to equip the missile with a laser guidance system at the end of flight was also developed earlier.
