More than 10 thousand people supported the appeal of railway trade unions, which were joined by other trade union organizations, political parties and collectives

Shortly after noon, a group of people threw Molotov cocktails, flares and stones against the police on Syntagma Square in the center of the Greek capital. The agents responded with gas and stun grenades.

The incidents spilled over to Panepistimi Street, where protesters set fire to construction equipment and damaged several bus stops, according to Athena 98.4 FM.

Later, in Omonia Square, agents they used gas again on the protesterswho retired to Piraeus Street and Socrates Street. After that, about 300 people gathered in front of the parliament building, again in the square, without major incident.

Apology from the Prime Minister

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis posted on social media an appeal to apologize for what happened in the train accident.

“I’ll start with the obvious. As prime minister, I am indebted to everyone, but especially to the families of the victims. huge apology both personally and on behalf of all those who have led the country in recent years,” the conservative president said.

“It cannot be that in Greece in 2023 two trains travel in opposite directions on the same track (…). We cannot, we must not we don’t want to hide behind human error. If the remote control project had been completed, then this accident would have been almost impossible,” he said.

Mitsotakis stressed that there will be a trial to quickly clarify responsibilities and announced that the responsible ministry would announce new measures to improve railway safety in a matter of days.
