PC sales fell last year, but workstations didn’t follow the trend and didn’t have a record year. However, the market stopped booming by the end of the year.
After fruitful Corona years, the PC market slumped somewhat in 2022. Sales of laptops, desktops and related components plummeted due to a combination of surplus purchases during the pandemic and an economic slowdown stemming from the energy crisis and the Russian war in Ukraine. The entire PC market? No, a small segment continued to valiantly buck the prevailing trend and make PC farmers’ lives a little more comfortable.
To put it more bluntly, the workstation market held up in three of the four quarters of 2022, according to IDC numbers. 7.7 million copies were sold last year. That is 2.1 percent more than a year earlier and also a record. Dell pulled most of the stuff and was the only major player to see its market share grow. HP was the second largest seller, followed by Lenovo in third place.
The party doesn’t last. In the fourth quarter of 2022, reality also caught up with the workstation market. In the final quarter of last year, shipments of workstations promptly declined 22.2 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The prospects for the near future for the PC market as a whole, including workstations, are not very rosy. While the devices remain relevant and hybrid working supports new powerful and flexible laptop models, sales will remain on the back burner for a while longer.
